Turbo Texas Hold'em helps Sonja win a big tournament!
Master Classics of Poker

by Richard Geller - Excerpted from Poker Digest 12/30/99

For six years the annual Master Classics of Poker in Amsterdam was mainly a European affair.

When the 1999 Master Classics convened on Sunday, November 7, the word on the floor was: The Yanks are coming. Phil Hellmuth Jr., Eric Seidel, John Bonetti. And who knew how many others?

But aside from a strong first-place finish by Jack Fox - $45,351 in the NLG 500 ($238) limit hold'em - the colonists had to content themselves with picking up whatever share of the prize money they could. None finished in the money in more than two events.

Another surprise came in the final event of the week, the NLG 200 no-limit-hold'em-with-unlimited-rebuys fracas. This was won by Sonja Camenzind of Switzerland, who was very happy to beat 219 other players to win $26,287. You might not recognize her name. That's because - according to the story - Sonja had never played in a tournament before in her life. Or a cash game. No, Sonja learned poker, by playing the Wilson Turbo software on her computer.
